Choosing a Hospital
When an NHS GP initially refers you to see a consultant or specialist, you can choose which hospital you would prefer to be referred to. You can choose an NHS hospital or a private hospital that is contracted to do NHS work. You can make this choice ahead of your first appointment, whenever you are referred for a physical or mental health condition. Exceptions apply*
Choosing a Consultant Team
You can choose which clinical team will be responsible for your NHS treatment, so always discuss your options with the person referring you.
For a physical condition you will be seen by a consultant or a clinician from their team. For a mental health condition you will be seen by a consultant, a mental health team leader or a member of their team

Frequently asked questions
Does a GP practice have the right to refuse your registration?
A practice cannot refuse to accept you unless there are reasonable grounds - those grounds being;
- it has no capacity to take on new patients
- it may not be accepting patients that do not live within its practice boundary
- In your particular circumstances, it may not be appropriate for you to register with a practice that's a long way from where you live
If they refuse to accept you, they must provide you with a written reason for not accepting you. It is for the practice to make a clinical judgement at the point of registration as to whether it's appropriate to accept you.
Can I use an online doctor whilst still registered with my existing NHS GP practice?
In most cases yes, although some providers will only give you a consultation if you register exclusively with them. You need to check with the Virtual GP provider to see what conditions they require of you before giving you a consultation.
Can you register with a GP anywhere in England?
Since 2015, all GP practices in England have been free to register new patients who live outside their practice boundary area.
